Illustration Classes 2011-2012
Karen Luke Fildes is teaching two new classes at Arts & Craftsman Supply starting in October in Seattle! Sign up or help someone get this info… Middle school and highschool age students are welcome and would enjoy the style of creative focus. Illustration is not only a valuable skill during these times as solutions based science is developing, but it is an excellent source of amazement and enrichment.
Pre College Illustration and Portfolio/ The Art of Living Ideas
Tuesdays 3:30-5:20
$30 per session; an eight-week series starting October 25
Partial scholarships available
Bring your sketches and concepts along with previously created works and learn to format them for presentation. Rough sketches on the cafe napkin have the potential for greatness when you see them through the creative process. We will help to strengthen your confidence and vision as you add new techniques to round out each set of skills. During this series we will create a concept book, image bank and portfolio to help you realize your ambition to attend art or design school or simply to compile your ideas for confidence sake.

What this class is about:
The Naked Art of Living Ideas
Concept Development and Illustration
Learn the steps to effective creative process by trusting your own authentic ideas. Bring roughs into finals and add complimentary series to strengthen your portfolio. Your brilliance is fleeting in this cyber world where nothing seems to remain authentic. Make sure that your art is truly yours.
It is good if you can take hold of your significant thoughts, inventions, and solutions - they are seeds in gestation. I will be your guide as you to take your ideas through the steps of the creative process. It’s an ongoing visionary retreat for young artists, budding designers, writers, and people plagued with orphaned ideas. With some homework (or cafe-work) students will practice concept development from the seeds of gestation to birth. This class is an excellent studio session for students who have a senior project to prepare or a project to illustrate. If you don’t have a project and want to invent one, come for the fun of it, but be willing to stretch yourself. You will become addicted to the creative process and find ways to conquer your obstacles.

Nature is the inspiration in this class. Develop your awareness of the natural world as you explore illustration techniques and the process of working on a field guide of images or a poster containing several. Areas of possible interest: Botany, Animal Biology, Human Anatomy, Weather, Space, Microbiology, Geology, etc… Students will be exposed to the history of the drawing tool while using their contemporary skills to render images with the instrument of their choice. Color will be added as images evolve. Fantastical projects that are inspired by science are welcome. Drawing skills are not necessary but rather an interest in developing new awareness of the natural world.
